My Quest

The purchasing workflow for an online store was being redesigned, and I knew that it would be critical to test early and often if we wanted to create an intuitive experience for our users. Most of the design work was being done by an external agency, and their style was to focus about 90% on visual and 10% on user interaction. Because this was a critical workflow that deviated quite a bit from what was currently live, I needed to nail down any and all usability issues quickly and come up with a plethora of solid recommendations to implement in the design.

My Solution

Beginning with the comps from the agency, I worked with internal & external designers, UX team members, and key stakeholders to determine how a user would progress through this new workflow and what we hoped to learn from the research. There were no prototypers or developers to work with on this project, so I set out to create my own prototypes to be able to study this journey in as realistic a way as possible.

Using Axure, I crafted fully interactive prototypes that mimicked the planned purchasing workflow for a specific subset of products. I brought in participants for 3 days of testing, and at the end of Day 1 and Day 2 I reviewed the findings with my UX partners, brainstormed fixes for the issues we unearthed, and adjusted the prototype for the next morning. Using this rapid iterative approach we were able to improve the design and validate those changes all within the same week!

Outcomes:

  • Created flexible prototypes to test & iterate on proposed workflows in a realistic manner

  • Presented UX recommendations to stakeholders that had already been validated to reduce risk

  • Contributed to more user friendly pages & interactions
